Palliative
Care/Hospice
The Palliative Care Service (PCS) continues to be an integral part of the clinical, educational, and research programs in the Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics and IOA. It is involved in the care of patients at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC), and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) who have far-advanced illnesses for which no curative therapy is being offered.
A Palliative Care Section has recently been formed within the Department. Participating physicians include Neena Goel., M.D., Assistant Professor; Vinay Kutagula, MD, Assistant Professor; Jerry Malott, M.D., Assistant Professor; Morgan Sauer, M.D., Assistant Professor; A. Reed Thompson, MD, Associate Professor; and Theresa Travis, MD, assistant clinical professor. Drs. Malott, Sauer, Thompson, and Travis are associated with community hospice organizations that provide outpatient and inpatient hospice services. Drs. Goel, Kutagula, and Thompson work in Palliative Care at the CAVHS and at UAMS.
Inpatients patients are seen in consultation at University Hospital and at the CAVHS Hospitals, and ambulatory patients are seen in weekly outpatient clinics at the ACRC and the CAVHS. Non-ambulatory patients who live in the Little Rock area are visited by PCS physicians at home on a limited basis.
The Department’s Palliative Care physicians regularly participate in educational activities with undergraduate students in the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Pharmacy. Residents in Internal Medicine and Fellows in Hematology/Oncology and Geriatrics have either required or elective clinical rotations with the palliative care faculty. Our faculty regularly present on various aspects of palliative medicine at local, regional, and national conferences.
